Vidya (Divyanka Tripathi), who lives in Benares in India with her wicked paternal aunt, Hema (Renuka Bondre), is a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. Radha, Vidya's friend, informs her that the rich landlord, `Bade Thakur' Raghav Pratap Singh (Rajendra Gupta), was coming to their town to find a bride for his younger son, and she is confident that they will choose Vidya. However, Vidya replies that they will select a girl from a rich family, not her. Meanwhile, Hema taunts in front of Harish, her husband, and Kaushalya (Suhita Thatte), Vidya's mother, about Vidya only pretending to be a girl with virtues! Hema's daughter, Shalu, too leaves no stone unturned to humiliate Vidya and dumps all the household chores on her. Kaushalya feels sorry for Vidya that despite the house belonging to her deceased husband, Vidya and she were at the mercy of his brother Harish and wife Hema. Kaushalya also worries about Vidya not yet being married in spite of coming of age. On the other hand, Harish welcomes Raghav Pratap and his wife, Uma (Surinder Kaur), to their mansion. Harish had got the job of a caretaker in the mansion after his brother's death. Harish tries his best to make a good impression about Shalu to Raghav and Uma but he is displeased when Uma inquires about Vidya. Meanwhile, Radha who got a glimpse of Raghav's younger son excitedly tells Vidya about how he looks but says that she was unable to see his face because it was hidden under a cap.
Vidya and Radha are shocked to see the ruffian Harsh (Puneet Vashisht) return to their town. Harsh tries his best to woo Vidya but she scorns him. Meanwhile, Hema orders Vidya to wash Shalu's clothes right away, so Vidya goes near the river bank. However, a shawl falls off and floats in the river. She goes to retrieve it when a boy swimming in the river takes it and goes away. A man calls out to him as 'Chote Thakur' (Landlord's younger son). Later, Vidya comes to the temple with her mother, and Hema comes there with Shalu. The priest tells everyone at the temple that Raghav is looking out for a bride for his younger son, so all the ladies give their eligible daughter's names to him. Kaushalya gives Vidya's name, much to the ire of Hema and Shalu. Hema asks Vidya to recite a verse from the Holy Text, and Vidya gets upset because she is illiterate. Hema insults Kaushalya and her by asking in front of everyone how an illiterate girl like Vidya could be a deserving bride for the landlord's son!
Hema drags Vidya back home and berates her. As punishment, Hema goes to scald Kaushalya but Vidya promises her aunt that she will stay away from Raghav and his wife. Hema says that she will not punish Kaushalya and scalds Vidya's hand instead! Kaushalya apologises to her daughter for her mistake. On the other hand, the priest gives Raghav and Uma a list of the prospective brides. Uma sees a name struck off, but is still able to read Vidya's name. Meanwhile, Kaushalya falls ill in the middle of the night but her family refuse to hear Vidya's plea for help. Vidya escapes and goes to fetch medicines for her mother. Vidya meets the doctor who gives her the medicines. However, on her way back, she is confronted by Harsh and his goons. Harsh's goon breaks the medicine bottle. Just then, she sees a truck approaching and seeks help from a boy who offers her a lift. The boy turns out to be Raghav's nephew Cheenu (Manish Naggdev). Harsh then sees Vidya's earring fallen. Cheenu and Vidya get talking, and she mentions that she had seen his cousin, Sagar, swimming. Vidya reaches home but is caught red-handed by Hema. Hema demands to know from Vidya where she had gone, so Kaushalya replies that she had gone to fetch medicines for her. However, Vidya has no medicine to show, so Hema drags her out of the house and calls out to the neighbours. Hema slanders her name. Just then, Harsh arrives there and says that Vidya had come to meet him.
Harsh gives Vidya her earring, and she is shocked. He asks her not to be afraid and claims that they love each other. Vidya pleads innocence but Harsh says that she comes to meet him every night. Kaushalya vouches for her daughter's character. Harsh triumphantly tells Vidya that if she does not belong to him, then he will not let her belong to anyone else. Cheenu informs Raghav and Uma about the girl he had seen and how she would be an ideal choice for Sagar. On the other hand, Hema beats Vidya, while Kaushalya watches helplessly. Hema tells Harish that she knows Vidya is innocent but accused her only to create fear in Kaushalya and her. Hema and Harish visit Raghav and Uma. Raghav complains to Harish about the bad condition of the mansion, so he replies that his daughter, Sindoora, had advised him not to waste any more money on the dilapidated mansion. Hema and Harish are taken aback when Raghav says that Uma and he would like to meet Shalu because Hema convinces Raghav that the girl he wants to see for his son is indeed her own daughter! Hema comes home and warns Vidya and Kaushalya that Vidya must not be seen around when Raghav and Uma arrive. She further cautions them to tell others that the cooking was done by Shalu, not Vidya. Meanwhile, Cheenu's car breaks down, and Raghav and Uma decide to visit the same temple where Vidya is praying for the well- being of others. Raghav and Uma meet Vidya. Hema, who is also there,is shocked to see this.
